April 2004 Archives
My e-vice of the last few months has been a computer game called Warcraft III. I've been playing with a number of my co-workers, all of whom I believe are at least 30 years old. Normally, we stick to the confines of our small group, but occasionally we summon the courage to venture out into online play against strangers. There, we are routinely and effortlessly humiliated by 14-year-olds who couldn't care less about how good we were at Defender or Dig Dug back in the day.
Earlier today, I played a game against 'Tazic' which proved to be an exception. Things began pleasantly enough:
Tazic: hi Tazic: gl hf pcal: you too'This is a standard Warcraft greeting made at the beginning of a game, shorthand for 'good luck, have fun.' It's intended to remind and acknowledge that this is just a game and not worth getting too upset about. I would soon come to doubt Tazic's sincerity in this, however. As the game proceeds, I can tell from his win-loss record that Tazic (45%) is a considerably better player than I am (25%). Therefore, I'm really not expecting to win here, and sure enough, the game eventually turns against me. On three separate occasions, I am quite certain I have lost, but barely manage to stay alive. Finally, at one point, I was able to take advantage of a rather stupid strategic mistake on Tazic's part. This turned the tables and placed victory beyond his grasp.
Tazic: fuck uOk, that's not cool. I thought we were supposed to 'hf' here? Apparently Tazic was not, because when his inevitable defeat arrived a few minutes later, he promptly exited the game with one final observation:
Tazic: ure a fagNow, on the rare occasions when I am able to win one of these things, I do so graciously. However, in this case, I could not resist the urge to rub the little homophobic twerp's nose in it a little bit. I continued the conversation with him by 'whisper' chatting with him, as I leisurely dismantled the remains of his now-abandoned defenses:
pcal: Does you mother know you talk like that? Tazic: ure just luk gay. pcal: gg, sore loser (gg = 'good game', the end-game counterpart to 'gl hf') Tazic: i beat you on score pcal: Congratulations. Who got the W? Tazic: i should have won pcal: Why? Because I'm a fag? LOL Tazic: no becuz of ure gay ass AP's (AP refers to a tactic I used) pcal: It's called an MW - look into it (MWs are the obvious AP-counter which Tazic failed to employ) Tazic: fag
Seriously, what is that all about? I hope I wasn't like this when I was 14.
If you own Warcraft III, you can watch the replay of the game. (Requires Warcraft 3 v1.14)
